Description
Sealed for submersion, not just splashes.
Many orientation sensors have openings and are prone to failure from ingress. Some enclosed orientation sensors are built to shrug off rain and spray. The 3-Space™ Watertight v3.1 is built for submersion. Its rugged cast aluminum enclosure and locking connector are fully IP68-rated, the highest common ingress protection rating for dust and liquids, so the sensor keeps working where water or other liquids are a condition of the job, not an accident: on hulls and masts, in tanks and wet wells, on outdoor equipment, in around and under vehicles, and in down-hole installations.
What IP68 means here. IP67, the most common rating for “waterproof” sensors, covers temporary immersion of about 1 meter for 30 minutes. IP68 is defined by tougher, product-specific immersion conditions. The Watertight v3.1 enclosure was tested to exceed the performance of IEC 60529 IP68 conditions under 6 feet (1.83m) of water for 24 plus hours.
One sensor from fine orientation to hard impact.
Inside is a 10-DOF sensing core: triaxial gyroscope, dual auto-selecting accelerometers, magnetometer, and barometric pressure sensor. The Low-Range accelerometer (±2g to ±16g) handles precision orientation under normal motion. The High-Range accelerometer (±32g to ±320g) takes over automatically through impacts, slams, and shocks, so the same unit measures both without clipping. No second sensor, no second enclosure, no arbitration logic to write. The gyroscope can handle ultra dynamic conditions with selectable ranges up to ±4000°/sec.
Precision you can configure
Patented onboard processing and quaternion-based filtering run at AHRS filter update rates up to 2000Hz. Choose between Extended Kalman filtering and our proprietary QGRAD3™ filter, which delivers fused orientation with lower latency and lower computational overhead. A dynamic sensor confidence algorithm maintains accuracy as operating conditions change, and the gradient descent calibration process compensates for sensor error. Dynamic orientation accuracy is ±1° (average, when calibrated).
The integration of the World Magnetic Model (WMM) simplifies navigation and compassing tasks by providing tilt-compensated heading returns heading and bearing referenced to true north, magnetic north, or grid north with simple commands, with declination handled onboard instead of in your application code.
Connects to what you already run
Every unit includes USB 2.0, plus your choice of 3.3v UART for direct connection to a host processor (HU1) or RS232 for longer cable runs and existing serial systems (HU2). Serial baud rates are selectable from 4,800 to 4,000,000. Every sensor function is accessible through our well-documented open protocol, in human-readable ASCII or fast binary, with Python and C APIs and the free 3-Space™ Sensor Suite for rapid evaluation. Firmware updates are free for the life of the product.
